Military: 50 die in clashes in northwest Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistan’s military says more than 50 militants and three soldiers have been killed in two days of clashes in the country’s restive northwest.

Frontier Corps spokesman Maj. Fazlur Rahman says the clashes came during a two-day operation in Lower Dir, an area bordering the Swat Valley where the army has been wrapping up an offensive against Taliban militants.

Rahman says more than 50 militants were killed in the clashes Sunday and Monday in Lower Dir’s Maidan area.

He said Tuesday that those killed included militants who had fled the Swat area during the army offensive.

There is no way to independently confirm the casualty figures because the area is closed to journalists.
