Rugby IC to propose conducting floodlit
schools sevens tournament

The Rugby Interim Committee is looking at the possibility of organizing a seven-a-side rugby tournament for schools during the latter part of the year.

CEO Rugby Interim Committee Lasitha Guneratna told The Island that the Rugby Interim Committee was expected to talk to school authorities with the view of obtaining their commitment to field teams for the tournament.

"We need to first talk to them (School authorities) and get their views about having such a tournament. Everything is at discussion level and nothing has been confirmed as yet," said Gunertane.

He said that if the tournament is confirmed, matches would be played at the Sugathadasa Stadium or at the new rugby ground that has been built in Homagama.

According to Guneratne, the Rugby Interim Committee has plans of inviting as many schools as possible for the tournament and playing matches under floodlights.

He added that there had been plans for Sri Lanka to host a rugby sevens tournament for schools with the participation of schools from abroad but they had to cancel it.

Gunertane said that the Rugby Interim Committee was awaiting an invitation to field a team (Seniors) for an Asian Rugby Sevens Championships, which will be hosted by China this year.
