Wanted security guard surrenders
An employee of a private security firm who is said to have colluded with the robbers of nearly 90 million rupees at Kotadeniyawa last week, surrendered to the Colombo Crime Division on Monday.
The suspect and other security guards were on duty in the van when it began its journey, with cash amounting to nearly Rs 100 million, from Kurunegala to Colombo on July 14 night. He was an Air Force deserter, Police said. Investigations hve revealed that this suspect had traveled to the branches of the two private banks in Kurunegala in the company of the robbers on several occasions earlier enabling them to study the mode of cash collection and transportation in detail.
The suspect who is from Dehiwela had been promised a large sum of money as his share after the robbery but could not get any since all the robbers were arrested and a large sum of money was recovered by the Police within hours. The mastermind was arrested two days later.
The mastermind and another member of the robber gang had once served together with the informant in the Air Force.
Kotadeniyawa OIC IP Ivan and a Police team are conducting investigations directed by DIG (crimes) Anura Senanayake.
All suspects have been arrested.
