Addl. SG assures SC: Fishermen
won’t be allowed to use dynamite
The Additional Solicitor General, Kumar Arulanandan yesterday, assured the Supreme Court that the Minister of Fisheries would implement the regulation dated June 28, 2008 prohibiting the use of dynamite and nylon nets below a stipulated diameter in fishing.
The Secretary to the Southern Fisheries Association had complained to Court that the regulation is not implemented.
The dynamite and the nylon nets destroy young fish and the eggs. Hence they could cause a decline in the fish population, he had said.
K. Thiranagama appeared for the petitioner Duleep Sanjiva Senadhipathi.
In view of the assurance given by the ASG, the proceedings were terminated.
The Bench comprised Justice Saleem Marsoof, Justice J. Balapatabandi and Justice P. A. Ratnayake.
