Cop held for killing UPFA politician

A UPFA member of the Maharagama Municipal Council Sunil Ranasinghe died on Monday after being assaulted. A constable attached to the Maharagama Police and another suspect were arrested over his killing.

A post-mortem was conducted at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital yesterday and according to the Judicial Medical Officer death had occurred due to heart failure. It was also revealed that the deceased had undergone a heart surgery.

According to police investigations a van carrying the victim, his son and a few others had collided with a three wheeler in which the constable and another person were travelling, at the Moraketiya junction recently.

However, this matter was settled amicably and the PC had lodged a complaint with the Maharagama Police and the Councillor had complained to the Kottawa Police.

After lodging the complaint the PC had proceeded towards the Duwa Viharaya and the Councillor in the opposite direction. Near the Duwa Viharaya both parties had met again and had an argument. At this point the Councillor had been assaulted. He had died while being rushed to hospital, Police said.

According to the police, soon after the incident, the suspect PC has disappeared from his house along with his family. He was arrested later.

Maharagama OIC CI A Rupasinghe is conducting investigations on the directions of DIG Western Province (South) Prasanna Nanayakkara.

Meanwhile, in another incident on Sunday, a UPFA Kelaniya Pradeshya Sabha member H. Somawardena was assaulted near the Kiribathgoda Police Station by an unknown group. He has been admitted to the Kiribathgoda Hospital. A suspect arrested in this connection was produced in Court and released on bail.
