In what could be termed a continued baffling of a questionable seeding methods applied by the tournament organisers, both Vimuktha de Alwis and Eshan Jayamanne, the fifth seed and an unseeded player, advanced to the semi-finals on Saturday (22) in the coveted Boys’ Under-18 age group of this year’s prestigious Junior Tennis Nationals, continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) hard courts in Colombo.
Jayamanne who ousted title defender and third seed Amresh Jayawickrema on Friday (21) in a three setter, went on to topple sixth seed M.A. Shakir 6-4, 6-1 to book a semi-final berth with bottom seed Thangarajah Dineshkanthan and, by doing so, made a mockery of the standards maintained by the SLTA in seeding of the players in this year’s tourney.
Fifth seed de Alwis outplayed Shehan Gomesz, seeded fourth, to enter semis where he will meet top seed and a Davis Cup team member this year, Guyanga Weerasekera.
