Population and housing census on the cards

The Government will shortly launch a nation-wide census of population and housing after a span of three decades, which would be completed in 2011.

The Director General of Census and Statistics Department Mrs Suranjhana Vidyaratne said the last nation-wide or national census on population and Housing was carried out in 1981. Thereafter, in 2001 a similar exercise was carried out but only in 18 districts of the country.

She said that in 2001, except for certain areas of the Ampara district, the other districts of the North and the East were excluded from the national census.

"The Planning and Mapping conducted prior to a national census is taking place now and we expect to reach the people living at grassroot level through the network of 13,000 gramaseva officers, 325 Divisional Secretariats and 25 District Secretariats in the country", Mrs Vidyaratna explained.
