It was fascinating to watch the genius with flowers Christopher Lim from
Singapore create beauty right before your eyes which compere for the
evening Kumar de Silva described as magic. This unique opportunity of
floral art was brought to us by Ikeban International Sri Lanka Chapter
262 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. For the event the Ambassador for
Japan H.E. Kurio Takahashi and Madame Takashaki were the Chief Guests.
Before the commencement of the show were short speeches from Malika
Cooke as the President of the Association, and a keynote address by His
Excellency with the demonstration ending with a vote of thanks from the
Vice-President Shiromi Soosaipillai.
Perhaps for the first time in Sri Lanka Christopher showed arrangements in both Ikebana and Western styles, and sometimes a fusion of both which were indeed a visual delight. His use of materials ranged through many exotic blooms to roses and many kinds of foliage the average flower arranging enthusiasts would have discarded. Also tantalising was the speed at which he just threw things together to create incredible effects.
The committee members clad in black was up on stage to give a helping hand and among them were Siromi Elapatha, and Shiromi Soosapillai, with the other members Dushiyanthi Seevaratnam, Vathani Canagasooriyam and Neelia Molamure besides Chandi Wijeyaratna and others helping out in the auditorium.
To provide entertainment in song was Shenelle Fernando who brought a sparkle with numbers such as Mamma Mia which the audience enjoyed.
Humour and little stories from Mr. Lina brought ripples of laughter to add to the ambience of the evening.
