The
Orchid Circle of Ceylon celebrates their 75th anniversary with a grand
exhibition of orchids at the Viharamahadevi Park on 28th, 29th, 30th.
This exhibition will be held along with a sale of ornamental plants. The
main object of this show is to encourage the young orchid lovers to grow
orchids successfully and to participate in all orchid-related activities
by joining the Orchid Circle.
The orchid has a prestigious name worldwide and is grown in its many shapes and forms in every part of the world. Asian orchids have captured the world market with Thailand in the forefront of the world’s producers. Though Sri Lanka has lagged behind as a producer, the Orchid Circle has the distinction of being the first such society in Asia and the second oldest in the world. It was founded in 1934 with Mr. D. S. Senanayake as its first President.
The annual show at Viharamahadevi Park provides its members an opportunity to exhibit their most exotic blooms and compete for a variety of prestigious awards among which is the D. S. Senanayake Challenge Cup for the Best Orchid on show.
It also provides an opportunity to view some beautifully landscaped groups of orchids in colourful array and to learn something about growing orchids at the lectures which will be held daily during the show.
