There appears to be a growing demand for Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse to be appointed as IGP whilst continuing as Secretary of the Defence Ministry. This seems a be a sensible demand considering the rise in police crime and the incontrovertible fact that he has the capacity to put things right. There is also the poor quality of policing and the very poor quality of investigation.

There is today an almost complete lack of confidence in the police and this is indeed a national tragedy. Criminals rule the streets and are said to be even ruling the prisons. It is being said that there is a nexus between the police and the underworld; incidentally the ‘fake executions’ have also come to an end. There is also a known unholy alliance between the politician and the police. All anti social elements must be hounded out of the police.

All this only serves to indicate that there is such a BREAKDOWN OF LAW AND ORDER THAT IT REQUIRES THE ATTENTION OF THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF TO REMEDY THE SITUATION. Any nation that ignores this situation is doing so at its peril. Every citizen has a responsibility both towards himself and towards society and we need to act. A monumental tragedy would result if the government does not act on behalf of the people.
