'Tsunami hope'

Your Opinion page has been inundated with letters about the tsunami disaster. A majority of them are about unity among politicians, a new dawn and an opportunity to rise above the disaster. In the wake of an abundance of foreign aid, readers have voiced their dreams of better planned modern infrastructure. Their longing for a united, honest, transparent., corruption-free governance has been expressed.

Many have pointed out that since Independence 57 Years ago, we virtually have nothign to flaunt as achievements.

Meanwhile, many of our neighbours who were crippled after World War II have overtaken us. Leaders of such nations have inspired their peoples to work hard and rise from depths of poverty. Their efforts have been crowned with results.

As for us, since Independence 57 Years ago we have had a surfeit of crackpots barring a few. These morons have torn this paradise apart.

They have together brought the country to this pass, where there appears to be hope of return.

If all what the President said on Independence day could be implemented, we may be able to regain our paradise lost.

Certain Members of Parliament have come out with some solutions. If they are implemented, millions of people suffering in silence in this country will be relieved of the plight.

My personal opinion is that tsunamis can come as often as the early morning mist, but nothing can change our politicians, their attitudes and their sordid operations. Unity is somethign alien to them. Lust for wealth and power has become a Politician's way of life.
