Anti-crime squad: A step in the right direction

The law and order Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka, has given the green light to the IGP Chandra Fernando to proceed with the task assigned to the special Anti Crime squad.

It is a step in the right-direction. During the past few weeks, this unit has achieved much. Seventeen hardcore criminals, including an underworld kingpin have perished in battles with the police.

The much respected Ven. Omalpe Sobitha, MP has extended his fullest support for this endear our.

He has even gone to the extent of saying that the troops should be taken out if the situation demands their presence. In the wake of successful operations launched by this outfit, politicians , corrupt police officers and others have gone all out to thwart them.

These ruthless contract killers, rapists and drug barons, are now on the run. Some politicians, the scum of the earth, who were dependent on these criminals to silence their opponents and to rig elections and do electioneering have come to their rescue.

With their future threatened because of the forays that the police are making into the underworld, these politicians are making a surreptitious attempt to get the special units disbanded.

This vital unit has got off to a positive start, by holing out the criminals in the underworld.

Under these circumstances, the government should provide adequate security to the police personnel who man this unit and their families, because it’s a high risk job and the criminals trapped in this operation will go all out for their blood.

It is hoped that the President will not budge under pressure and will see to it that the police finish what they have embarked on.
