Rural sector transport at standstill

With bus crews and other staff of 14 SLTB depots going on strike demanding the pay hike of Rs. 2500 given to employees in the public sector most of the public transport services in the rural sector came to standstill yesterday (14).

The three cluster bus companies in Kalutara, Sabaragamuwa and Uva, who commenced the strike were joined by and Galle, Ambalangoda, Motratuwa, Udahamulla, Maharagama, Polonnaruwa, Homagama and Hatton depots yesterday.

The Chairman SLTB Dr. Shantha Jayaratne said he also agreed that the 2500 rupee pay hike to public sector employees should be paid to SLTB employees too. But he could not agree to a strike as a majority of these employees came out on strike in collusion with some trade unions.
